Local authorities in Germany are lacking billions of euros. The federal states also see the federal government as having a duty when it comes to state tasks - and a need for change in funding.

Modernizing the state and easing the burden on local authorities is a focus of the Minister Presidents' Conference chaired by Saxony in Berlin. The heads of government of the federal states are meeting this Thursday. According to the State Chancellery in Dresden, other topics include new financing instruments for the federal and state governments and the necessary economic upturn.

According to the announcement, the meeting will discuss the national import strategy for hydrogen, the preservation of Germany as a chemical location and the further development of the European Chips Act, among other things.

The meeting with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) that was originally planned afterwards was postponed due to his visit to US President Trump. It is to take place at a later date in a week or two.
