According to a recent analysis by AOK Plus, several tens of thousands of people in Saxony are living with serious health effects from tobacco consumption. "Smoking remains a key health risk" that is often underestimated. According to a statement from the health insurance company, around one in five adults still smokes regularly. Alarmingly, many young people are also turning to cigarettes or e-cigarettes. In light of this, the health insurance company promoted "taking the step towards a smoke-free life" on World No Tobacco Day (May 31).
Kasse: Immediate effects of quitting smoking
The health insurance company points to the immediate positive effects on health of quitting smoking. The risk of cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases is significantly reduced. It also improves physical fitness and increases life expectancy. "The body benefits after just a short time." Blood pressure and pulse normalize after just 20 minutes, lung function improves after a few weeks and the risk of heart attack, stroke or cancer decreases significantly after months to years. "After 15 years, the risk of heart attack corresponds to that of a non-smoker."
