Ahead of the second anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil recalled the suffering of the people in the country. "February 24, 2022 marked a turning point in Europe," the SPD politician said on Friday. "It is depressing to see that this war, which is raging right on our doorstep, is now in its second year and is claiming more victims every day. Entire towns and villages are being destroyed. The suffering of the people is indescribable."
At the beginning of the week, Lower Saxony signed a partnership agreement with the Ukrainian region of Mykolaiv. "We want to provide concrete help on the ground," explained Weil. The deputy governor of the region, Mykola Marinov, had described to him very impressively how the children in particular were suffering from the ongoing war.
Lower Saxony reportedly wants to support the region with humanitarian aid, economic cooperation and reconstruction. Two million euros have been earmarked for this in the state budget for this year.
