About one in three Saxon households live in their own four walls. The so-called home ownership rate was 34.2 percent in the 2022 census, according to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. However, this depends on the size of the municipality. This is how people live in Bavaria:
Renting in the city, owning in the countryside
People in Leipzig are the least likely to own their own home - the rate here is just 13.3 percent. In the municipality of Trossin in the district of North Saxony, on the other hand, 88.4 percent of households own their own home. According to statisticians, home ownership rates are over two thirds in many rural regions, but less than half in larger municipalities with over 10,000 people.
This is what the average home looks like
The average owner-occupier has 109 square meters of living space spread over five rooms. Couples with children have around 130 square meters and five to six rooms.
The correlation between living situation and ownership
Couples with children are also more likely to live in their own home than couples without children, according to the data. They also predominantly live in their own home instead of renting. For couples without children, the distribution is even. Single parents, on the other hand, live predominantly in rented accommodation.
