A rift in the Chemnitz AfD parliamentary group has recently hampered the work of the city council. From now on, there will be two AfD parliamentary groups in the council.

After a split, there are now two AfD parliamentary groups in Chemnitz City Council. The background to this is that twelve members had already left the previous 15-member city council faction on August 1 and founded the new "AfD Chemnitz City Council Faction". This was initially not recognized by the city leadership, who later corrected their opinion and instead considered the old group to be dissolved. However, this was not upheld by the Chemnitz Administrative Court.

Extraordinary meeting of the city council

"We have already lost a considerable amount of time due to the months of internal party disputes within the AfD and the resulting delay in appointments to committees and advisory boards," explained Lord Mayor Sven Schulze (SPD). The city will therefore not lodge an appeal with the Higher Administrative Court. Instead, new appointments are to be made to committees, advisory boards and supervisory boards at an extraordinary meeting of the city council on September 15.
