Following accusations of anti-Semitism in connection with an artwork at its annual exhibition, the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle plans to establish an independent ethics council. The council is to develop recommendations for dealing with artistic freedom, discrimination and public criticism, the university announced.
Criticism had been directed at a student relief which, according to the Halle Alliance against Anti-Semitism, depicted an oversized Palestinian flag and a form reminiscent of anti-Semitic imagery. The university rejected the accusation. The work is an abstract relief that was already created in spring 2023 and exhibited at the time - i.e. before the start of the Gaza war.
The sculptural form is deliberately ambiguous and figurative motifs were not intended. In addition, the color revision was only added this year and is intended to express the artist's empathy with the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
"Art is allowed to provoke, irritate and question social norms," said Rector Bettina Erzgräber. However, artistic freedom is not unlimited and ends where the rights of others are violated - for example in the case of incitement to hatred. Whether a limit has been exceeded must be legally examined. The introduction of an independent ethics council should help with future debates.
